National Nutrition Month: 5 Simple Ways to Connect with Food as a Family
March is National Nutrition Month, and this week, we’re focusing on connecting with food, helping little ones (and parents!) build a positive, engaging relationship with what’s on their plate. Food is more than just fuel; it’s about discovery, culture, and shared moments. Here are five simple ways to foster a deeper connection with food:
1. Get Hands-On in the Kitchen
Involving kids in meal prep, even in small ways, can make them more excited to try new foods. Let them rinse veggies, stir ingredients, or choose between two options. Engaging their senses - touch, smell, and sight - helps build curiosity and familiarity with different foods.

2. Eat Together, No Pressure
Shared meals aren’t just about nourishment; they’re a time for connection. Whether it’s a quick breakfast or a slow Sunday dinner, sitting together fosters a positive food experience. Keep it relaxed, no pressure to eat every meal together. Always remember that food is about pleasure and teaching these moments of connection to your children when you are relaxed and able to take your time is the best way to share these values.
3. Talk About Food Beyond the Table
Food is a great topic to explore outside of mealtime. Chat about where ingredients come from, visit a farmers’ market, or read a book about food. Making food a part of everyday conversations builds a natural curiosity!
4. Let Kids Explore Food Their Way
It’s okay if they want to touch, squish, or even play with their food a little. Sensory exploration is a huge part of learning. The more comfortable they feel with food, the more likely they are to enjoy a variety of flavors and textures over time.
5. Create Little Food Rituals
Simple traditions, like a weekly ‘build-your-own’ meal, trying one new ingredient together, or making a special weekend breakfast, can create positive memories around food. Rituals help make food experiences joyful and meaningful.
Connecting with food is a journey, not a race. Encouraging a love for food starts with making it a fun and natural part of your family’s daily life.
